Historical Background:

University of Mysore is one of the oldest prestigious and foremost

centre of higher education in the Country. The motto of the

University, as engraved on its emblem “Nothing is Equal to

Knowledge” and “I always uphold the Truth”. The University

was established on 27.07.1916 by its founding father His Highness

Nalvadi Wodeyar- IV the then Maharaja of Mysore and Sir. M

Vishweswariah the then Dewan of Mysore. University of Mysore

was the 5th University established in the Country and the very

pioneer in the Princely State of Mysore. The present jurisdiction of

the University covers 4 districts viz., Mysore, Hassan, Mandya and

Chamaraja Nagar.

MYSORE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Mysore University library is one of the oldest and largest University

Library in the country and Mother of other University Libraries in

Karnataka. The Library started functioning in the year 1918. It

has a glorious record of 91 years of worthy service with a resource

collection 6 Lakhs volumes in its systems today. The inception

collection of the library was around 2311 books which was housed

in Jubilee building and later moved to Maharaja’s college campus

and finally the library shifted to new building at Manasagangotri

Campus in 1965. Foundation stone of this functional building was

laid by first UGC Chairman Prof. C.D.Deshmukh on 11th July 1960.

It was inaugurated by the then President of India Dr. Sarvapalli

Radhakrishnan on 7th Dec. 1965.

LOCATION OF THE LIBRARY

The Mysore University Main Library located in the Manasagangotri

Campus covered with Greenery all around. The Library building

is surrounded by towards North-Road and Canteen, South -

Higginbotham’s book shop, East - Sports Stadium and Kukkarahalli

Lake and West - Kuvempu Institute Kannada Studies. The

name “Manasagangotri” was suggested by the most revered National

poet Dr. K.V. Puttappa (Kuvempu) a former Vice-Chancellor of the

University and Gnana Peetha Award.

ARCHITECTURE OF THE LIBRARY BUILDING

The Present professionally functional Library building is well planned

and structured one. It is surrounded with green pasture. Any user

who walks along the carpet in the huge stack cum reading halls

of reference and periodicals divisions running half a furlong feels

delighted. The well furnished and illuminated inside atmosphere is

very serene and pleasant and encourages one to involve deeply in

pursuit of academic and research activities. The library is beautiful

and attractive, housed in a building with 1,10,000 Sq.ft carpet area.

The library building has provision of expansion both vertically and

horizontally.

WORKING HOURS:

The Library will kept open for the benefit of users from 8 am to 8 pm

on all working days. On Holidays between 10 am to 5.30 pm. During

the time of Examinations from 8 am to 9 pm. The library is providing

Open Access System facility.

GANGOTRI GLADES

This is by far this is the most beautiful sports grounds

in Mysore.This cricket stadium is located inside the

University of Mysore’s Manasagangotri campus,

hence the name Gangotri Glades. Many state level

and national tournaments are held at Gangotri Glades,

the most prestigious being the 2010 Ranji Trophy

final between Karnataka and Mumbai. Gangotri

Glades is poised to host many important cricketing

The stadium is on a terraced landscape on the gentle

slops that over look the Kukkarahalli Lake. There is a

shallow gallery all around with a newly built pavilion at

one end. Beyond the gallery all around the ground are

great looking flowering trees. The whole thing gels well

in the natural surroundings.

Though the grounds belong to the university, it is

maintained by the Karnataka State Cricket Association

(KSCA). It seems they are doing a good job here. The

neatly trimmed grassy ground and the well maintained

pitch vouch for this.

cricketing perspective this is a very active place in

Mysore.Apart from Gangotri Glades Mysore have a

few more cricket grounds. The Maharaja’s College

cricket ground overlooking the Crawford Hall and

the Oriental Research Institute is a pretty large one.

The sprawling Infosys campus in Mysore has a cricket

ground. Though a privately owned stadium, this too is a

Ranji Trophy venue.

Gangotri Glades Gallery. The newly added pavilion is on

the left.Gangotri Glades is at a short distance (10 minutes

drive) from the city center. Take the Hunsur Road (Vinoba

Road) from JLB road. After about 3-4 km you’ll see the

Kukkarahalli Lake on the left. Turn left at the signal into the

university campus. You’ll find the Gangotri Glades behind the

open-air theater inside the university campus.

                                                          The Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion

Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion is a heritage building in Mysore.

Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion is a building in of Mysore city, Karnataka. It is located in the green surroundings of Manasagangothri, the campus of the University of Mysore. It rises on a hillock on the west side ofKukkarahalli Kere(lake). The Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion houses a museum of priceless collections of artifacts.

The Karnataka government classifies it as a heritage structure.The mansion was built in 1905, during the period of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, for princess Jayalakshmi Ammani, the eldest daughter of the Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar, at a cost of Rs. 7 lakhs. The location was intentionally chosen to be on top of a small hillock above Kukkarahalli Kere(lake).

It was originally called 'the First Rajkumari Mansion'. The first princess Jayalakshmi, was married to Sirdar M. Kantharaj Urs in 1897, who later became the Dewan of Mysore. Kantharaj Urs had a house in the Fort of the Palace called "Gunamba House" after his mother.

The mansion was built to be commensurate to their status of princess and dewan.The mansion was acquired by the University of Mysore to establish a postgraduate centre in its campus known as Manasagangotri. The building was in a state of neglect for a very long time. The building was restored at a cost of Rs. 1.17 crores with funds from the Infosys Foundation. Renovation began in 2002, and completed in 2006. It was inaugurated by the governor of Karnataka on Jan 16th 2006 by switching on this new illumination system.

Architectural features

The renovated mansion has 125 rooms, 300 windows, 287 exquisitely carved doors and it was spread across 6 acres (24,000 m2). There are entrances on each side, different from each other. The entrance on the northern side has an extrusion on the stairs presumably to be used as alighting platform from cars and chariots.

 The mansion is chiefly built of brick and mortar, timber and iron. Stone was dispensed with considering the amount of delay it would have on construction if it were used. There are separated drainages for rain water and used water.

NEW LOOK SOON: Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion which will come alive in brilliant

hues. —

MYSORE: Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, reckoned to be an architectural jewel in Mysore, will
come alive in its brilliant hues and bathe in milky white light on Monday when Governor T.N.
Chaturvedi switches on the new illumination system for the heritage structure.


The beauty of the illuminated mansion will border on the sublime and will be ethereal when
the lights are on, according to the Special Officer N.S. Rangaraju, Department of Ancient
History and Archaeology, University of Mysore. "It is befitting that the royal mansion gets a
facelift and is illuminated during its centenary year," he added.


A proposal that was first mooted almost two years ago it has seen the light of the day
because of the efforts of the Vice-Chancellor of the university J. Shashidhar Prasad and
Registrar N.D. Tiwari, said Prof. Rangaraju.


The illumination system will incorporate 40 special bulbs each ordered and certified by
Philips and is reckoned to cost nearly Rs. 6 lakhs. Prof. Rangaraju said the mansion would
be illuminated on all public holidays, including Sundays, and on special occasions such as
festivals or major events. It will be a new attraction to tourists and the locals alike. The
specially installed bulbs take about 15 minutes to attain their full luminosity and the system
has been tried and okayed, he said. Four of the 40 lights will be perched on a high pole
every day and will swathe the sublime building with milky white light on all nights.


These special bulbs are not the regular neon lights but are akin to the ones used to
illuminate the Crawford Hall, according to Prof. Rangaraju.


The Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion was meant to one of the palaces for the royal family
and was acquired by the University of Mysore to establish the postgraduate centre at
Manasagangotri.


The structure was in a dilapidated state because of neglect and was fully restored and
conserved with funds from Infosys Foundation. Today, the splendid mansion is cited as an
example for heritage and architectural conservation and will house the Mysore University
Museum Complex, reckoned to be the first of its kind among universities in the country

The University of Mysore has introduced two years regular courses in Electronic Media from Sept.2006.
Considering the growth of activities in electronic media, University of Mysore introduced a master of
Science in Electronic Media (two years) and a Post-graduate Diploma in Electronic Media ( ONE Year).
These courses are offered at the Educational Multimedia Center (EMMRC) complex of Manasagangothri
Campus, under Semester System.


The institution


Educational Multi-Media Research Centre (EMMRC) is the only institution of its kind to be established
at University of Mysore by the University Grants Commission in the entire state of Karnataka.


EMMRC produces educational videos for 24 Hour Educational Channel and Doordarshan’s National
Network DD-1,Gyan Darshan and 24 hours Higher Educational Channel-Vyas.


EMMRC is equipped with state of the art infrastructure for Television and multimedia productions
and also has a good human resource and expertise to educate teachers and students on multi media
applications.


About the course


In India, there is the number of Television channels for which required technical personnel are to
be educated with the right skills and background looking at the rapid growth of activities in electronic
media and a vacuum among competent professionals, University of Mysore happy to introduce a Master
of Science in Electronic Media (two years ) and a Post-graduate Diploma in Electronic Media(one year).


The Science and Technology Communications Divisions of the University has designed these
programmes under the Board of Studies in Science and Technology Communications. These courses will
be conducted in the Educational Multimedia Research Center (EMMRC) complex of the Manasagangotri
Campus, under Semester System

The Modules taught in the M.Sc. course include visual Media & Instrumentation Cinematography,
Editing Digital Video and Digital Audio, Production Planning and Management, Script writing for
Electronic media, Graphics and Animation, T.V. Production, Multimedia Authoring tools, multimedia
& Internet Technologies, Advertising Media, Radio & TV Newscasting Radio Production, E-content
Development, Media Research and TV Broadcasting Techniques including satellite based video
streaming . Students will be working on live projects. They have to complete a set of broadcast quality
production. They will be exposed to latest skills and equipments

The well trained faculty consists of media professionals of long –standing experience with a number
of awards to their credit. Their expertise in the field of television production, both Tele-films and

The University of Mysore has been in the forefront in extending non‐formal education in


Information Technology to the public through CIST, housed in the imposing senate hall complex


at Manasagangotri. CIST offers various job oriented Postgraduate Diploma, Diploma and


Certificate


to train youth with soft skills required for IT industry. The courses range from basics


of computers to advanced programs like Bioinformatics, Geoinformatics. Entertainment and


media are two important fields of IT application. To empower our students in these fields,


three multimedia and animation courses are offered.


Students on the campus may acquire and upgrade their computer skills concurrently


with their regular academic programmes through non‐formal training packages offered by CIST


and thus get themselves equipped to face the challenges of the modern world.


Support Services


Administrative Offices


The administrative offices of the University are housed in the Crawford Hall, an


imposing building adjacent to the Kukkarahalli Lake, known for its scenic splendor. The offices


of the Vice‐Chancellor, the Registrar, the Registrar (Evaluation), the Finance Officer and the


Public Grievance Cell are located in this building. The office of the Administrative Officer,


situated at Manasagangotri, looks after the activities of the postgraduate campus.


Library


The CIST has a separate Library for its students. Around 3000 books and 900 CDs on various


subjects of information technology are there for the use of students.


Cafeteria


There is a centrally located canteen on Manasagangotri campus, which caters to the


needs of students, faculty and the general public.


Health Centers


There are two health centers ‐ one located on Maharaja's college campus and the other


at the Manasagangotri campus of the University of Mysore, to take care of the medical
